Wasabi & Whine

Quilly | May 30, 2007

Well, the kids got their wasabi peas, but I didn’t get to work on my report cards. The system was down most of the morning. When all 100 plus of us hop online and start plugging in grades our server has a nervous breakdown. Happens at least once every grade period.

Stay Tuned For Mayhem!

Quilly | May 29, 2007

Tomorrow I am giving my students Wasabi Peas to taste and design advertisements for. They can write taglines and do art, while I sit at my desk and do report cards.
I don’t know how much work I’ll actually get done because I want to watch the fun and listen to the conversations. [...]

Sinking Fast

Quilly | May 29, 2007

Well, my friend is moved, finally.  The drama in her life is over, but the drama in my life is about to crank up full steam.
My life is selling on eBay at a startlng rate and I spend much of my time wrapping packages and making mailing labels. Report cards are due Friday and I’ve [...]

Is School Out Yet?

Quilly | May 27, 2007

Friday was not a good day for my self-esteem.  As the day began a first or second grade girl I did not recognize ran up to me, “Ms. A!  Ms. A!”  I stopped, expecting to hear some playground tattling or tale of woe.  Instead the sweet little darling informed me quite boldly, “When my mother’s [...]

Liverworst, Isn’t Worst.

Quilly | May 25, 2007

I am a teacher.  I believe in introducing my students to new concepts, ideas and things.  Today they each received a little slice of liverworst.
A few approached the morsel boldly, popping it into their mouths.  The others waited and watched.  Izzy gagged, spit in his hand, then grabbed a Kleexex and started scrubbing his tongue.  [...]

Interactive Learning

Quilly | May 23, 2007

Jay: Ms. A., I don’t like your hair color. You should change it.
Me: Jay, I don’t like your nose. You should change it.
Whole Class: Ooooh!
Jay: That wasn’t very nice!
Me: Really?
Jay: I guess I wasn’t very nice, either, huh? Never mind. Your hair’s okay I guess. [...]

Washing Paper Plates

Quilly | May 23, 2007

Life in a second language learner’s classroom:
We are having a fund raiser spaghetti dinner at the school tonight.  The teachers are to be the wait-staff.  One of my students asked, “What’s wait-staff?”  I said, “You know, cooks, waiters, dishwashers — the folks that do the work so all you have to do is sit [...]

Crunch!

Quilly | May 21, 2007

Thanks, Ma! Tasty!
(He ate the pale lavender one on the far side. Have I mentioned that he’s free to a good home?)

Busy

Quilly | May 21, 2007

Don’t look for me here.  I am helping a friend pack and move.  Don’t ask me why I’m helping a friend when I should be doing my own packing.  I just am.

Double Exposure

Quilly | May 20, 2007

I know I said in yesterday’s post that I don’t normally disrobe in public, but . . .
I spent so much time writing yesterday’s post that I was almost late for my friend, Jamie’s, Bridal Shower. I bathed, got dressed and put on my make-up in record time, then I flew out of the [...]

Season’s End

Quilly | May 19, 2007

Today at Sidewalk we said good bye for the season. Here are the highlights:
I do not normally disrobe in public, but today I got naked in the grocery store. I was picking out watermelon, deposited one in the cart and when I turned to get the other, the cart kept the [...]

Broccoli & Bull

Quilly | May 17, 2007

Tomorrow we are having a multicultural fair at school and many of my students did not have the projects they were creating in Mrs. B’s class ready for display. When it came time for lunch recess those kids were not free to go. Despite the fact that they and Mrs. B. stayed in [...]

Nice Try ….

Quilly | May 16, 2007

I only accept writing papers after one-on-one conferences. Each student receives personalized and individual writing instruction — if they show up at their scheduled conferences. They are held during class time, but some kids show up with unfinished papers, and we don’t conference until their work is done. The student’s final paper [...]

Splash Dance

Quilly | May 15, 2007

We were on our way back to the classroom at the end of the day. I had just picked my students up from P.E. and the final dismissal bell was about to ring. Once they got in the classroom the kids were more interested in the air conditioning, the drinking fountain and cooling [...]
