Communication 1a

Quilly | October 30, 2007

Most of our pre-K kids are language deficient. Our job is to get them to speak properly. Today I was gifted with three full sentences from three different kids. I should be celebrating, but ….
I held up a green crayon this morning and asked Polk, “What color is this?” He responded. [...]

They’re Too Cute

Quilly | October 24, 2007

Cass had been the only girl in our class for a long time. About the same time I joined the classroom so did a young lady named Marisol. Cass and Marisol made instant friends. They walk to recess and to lunch together hand-in-hand. Today Cass and Marisol were walking together and [...]

She Says

Quilly | October 23, 2007

In response to OC’s post, I did not provoke him. I am loving and sweet and kind. I don’t even know how to provoke.
Honest.
You believe me, don’t you?

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?

Quilly | October 20, 2007

Here in Makaha Valley, some of the neighbors are more colorful then others. I keep trying to coax these guys — oh, excuse me, the big one is a gal — home for dinner. O’Ceallaigh says they’re tough and I really won’t enjoy them.

Learning

Quilly | October 18, 2007

Sometimes it is hard to tell just who is teaching whom. I was doing eyes, ears, nose & mouth with four year-old David today as we were waiting for lunch. He touched his mouth, eyes and ears okay, but when I said nose he just looked at me and started to lean close. [...]

The Human Pretzel

Quilly | October 17, 2007

My hip was hurting last night and even after a couple of Ibuprofen I still slept poorly. The pain is the result of a 15 second classroom melodrama:
One moment I was asking Kenny to wash his hands. The next he was thrashing around on the floor screaming, “No! No! No!” like soap and water were [...]

Yay!

Quilly | October 17, 2007

OC is home.  Northwest airlines kept him an hour longer than they were supposed to, but finally OC is home!  He brought me a book –hardback — that I have been impatiently waiting for to come out in paperback.  And a book on the ghosts of San Francisco, so if I go missing for awhile, [...]

I Belong in Pre-K

Quilly | October 15, 2007

I tried to put my left shoe on my right foot this morning. That could mean OC needs to come home so I can get some decent sleep. OR it could just be the natural result of ten years without shoes.

Just Peachy

Quilly | October 13, 2007

I’ve come to the end of my first week as a pre-school teacher and some of you out there may be wondering how I did. So am I, especially since, when I come home exhausted, collapse on the couch and complain to OC about my day, he rolls on the floor laughing. I [...]

Itsy Bitsy Spider

Quilly | October 11, 2007

An itsy-bitsy spider which very much resembled a four year-old’s hand crawled across the lunch table and tickled me. A very large spider which very much resembled my hand crawled back toward the four year-old. The itsy-bitsy spider turned into an itsy-bitsy ninja warrior and flattened the very large spider. The very [...]

First Day in Pre-School

Quilly | October 9, 2007

My sister Caryl called yesterday evening.  She said that for my first day in pre-school I wasn’t to bite, hit, scratch, spit or pinch.  Grownups can be such a bummer.
I re-learned my vowels in  pre-school today.  They go like this:
A is for ack!
E is for eek!
I is for ick!
O is for ow!
U is for ugh!
and [...]

Ma’ili Beach

Quilly | October 4, 2007

OC and I went to Ma’ili (ma–E–lee) Beach again the other day. OC was looking for seaweed, as usual. I was looking for (well, I didn’t really have to look, they’re everywhere) shells.
My favorite shells are the ones worn smooth by the sea. In Friday Harbor and on Vancouver Island I had [...]

Something to Celebrate

Quilly | October 3, 2007

Excerpt from Oahu Dreams:
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Spam,
Happy birthday to you!
Yep, you heard me correctly. Today is the 70th Birthday of Spam canned luncheon meat. OC called me from work to tell me he’d read about it on the front page of the local paper during his [...]

Fishy Revelations

Quilly | October 1, 2007

Let me start by telling you that when emails were flying back and forth and we were getting to know each other, OC told me he would eat anything.  Then we end up in the same home — sharing the same kitchen, table and meals — and I discover that he doesn’t care for, or [...]
