A is for Albatross

April 30, 2008

Rescued Albatross at Sea Life Park, Waimanalo, Hawaii (Oahu).

The birds at Sea Life Park are not caged. This fella has his wings clipped so he can’t fly until he is healed. All of the birds living in the park sanctuary are free to go as soon as they are healed.

Many of the animals in the park are there not just to provide an attraction, but to offer them shelter and safety as they recuperate from traumas and injuries. Some animals will never again be able to survive in the wild and the park is their permanent home.

19 of the 21 species of albatross are on the Endangered Species List

He is a lovely looking specimen. You know at first, I thought you were going to say he’d landed in the garden!

  • Gattina says:

I wonder what is the difference between a seagull and an albatross ? They look so alike ! I have seen a lot at the English South East coast and they were very big. At the Belgian coast they are far smaller.

  • Carletta says:

I’ve never seen one so this is a treat!

  • What a beautiful bird! It reminds me of the book I use to read over and over again as a child called “Albert the Albatros.”

Mine is up. Sorry to keep you waiting. I usually post my photos around midnight EST, but I didn’t make to midnight last night. LOL!!

  • Crazycath says:

That is so sad that so many are endangered. They really are a magnificent bird. I have never seen a real albatross – I suspect that what Gattina sees are very large seagulls (like we get on the North West coast) as an albatross does not socialise like a seagull as far as I know. Seagulls have grey in them too, and yellower beaks. But hey – I am NO expert! I think the albatross beas though is more hooked.

Anyway, I am rambling. It is a great photo and post.

And thank you for putting your non-comment on my post! I have duly noted that it is not a comment. LMAO. ;0)

I NEVER would have thought of Albatross! GREAT “A”!!! So where is the “linky”??? How do we know who else to go visit??? Sheeeeesh! And … I ALWAYS post the night before – cuz I’m a lazy BUM and like to sleep IN in the morning! SOME of us don’t have to get up to an alarm clock… and some of MY visitors only come in the wee hours of the morning… ;)

  • Robert says:

Very nice debut of your alphabet pictures. it makes me want to go back to Sea Life Park and see some of the other guests they have. Thanks for hosting this new project. I didn’t know if you were going to add a Mr. Linky or just have us link here in comments.

Click here for my “A” post.

  • Judy says:

Great A. I love the looks of the albatross and always remember The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner. My first is up.

    Here is my photoblog.

  • Jamie Dawn says:

I learned my A-B-Cs by singing a little song that began, “A is for albatross ay-a-ay…”

    Those are nice photos.

This is going to be a fun Alphabet challenge with photo’s … Do we post everyday in a row or only on Thursday’s ?? For my A, I picked the word adorable…

  • sauer kraut says:

I thought these birds were supposed to be huge. This guy doesn’t even look as large as the black turkey vultures that cruise the skies around here but at least he’s not as ugly.

  • Lilli says:

That is a pretty bird and yet so sad, but good that there is someone there to take care of him.
I too joined in on your fun. I hope i can post something daily. Come check out mine

  • nessa says:

Your Project Green was fun. Your WW photo is beautiful. I’m off to look for an A and B. I’m behind as usual.

  • Alice says:

That’s a wonderful post. I enjoyed the photos and the story behind them. I’ve joined into the game too. I’ve just recently seen some of these challenges, and always too late, but they look so awesome. This time I’m in time.

Maggie — our 3rd floor condo came sans garden.

Gattina — click the link I so helpfully provided. Albatross are quite large. This guy stands about knee high.

Carletta — I anticipated that a good many people would feel the same.

Karen — I aim for midnight, too — and make it because I can set “auto-post”, and post while I am soundly asleep!

    Cath — thanks for the — clarification? I think … ;)

Melli — how do you get the great linky that putsd the names right on your page?

Robert — Mr. Linky gives me fits, but he’s there for those so inclined …

Judy — 10th grade English Class — I will also never forget it.

  • QuillDancer says:

JD — and your phonics have served you well!

Mar — I have yet to go sailing. I am looing forward to the adventure.

Polona — I know a floor you can sleep on rent free!

    Jill — mine’s albatross free.

Dr John — three photos of the same thing for perspective.

    Andrew — I agree.

Shelly — welcome. I loved the crab apple tree.

Baba — and adorable she is!

Sauerkraut — he’s still a baby, yet stands about knee high.

Lilli — welcome — I enjoyed your apple blossom room!

Nessa — you’ll still excel and make the rest of us look like slackers.

I’ve never seen an albatross before but I remember reading about one in high school English. They do kind of look like sea gulls.
