Jientje’s One Thousand Words Photo Challenge

Jientje, our mistress of fun, has cooked up a new photo challenge, and this is what she has to say about it:

When I was a kid, I was always fascinated by the colourful language my grandmother used.  She had such a way with words, she had her own funny ways to describe things and that memory still makes me smile. As long as people have been around, they have tried to communicate with each other. As a means of getting the message across as clearly as possible, idioms and sayings have found their way into our language.

Now, because a picture paints a thousand words, I thought it would be nice to make this a new photo challenge. The idea is to pick an idiom, or a saying, ( even slang is allowed) and illustrate it with a picture. Each week we’ll cover two letters of the alphabet, okay?

And so we start ….

Week One:  A & B

An Ace Up His Sleeve

Idiom

If you have an ace up your sleeve, the implication is that you have a hidden asset which may,
or may not,
be legal and above board.
In the wild west gambling halls, if someone was caught with an ace up his sleeve,
he was shot first and questioned later.

Buttons & Bows

metaphor

If you’re all dressed up in buttons and bows, you are wearing your fanciest duds.
Gram used to tell me to get into my “buttons and bows”
when she wanted me to dress for church or some fancy occasion.
The metaphor is also the title of a song first published in 1947
and can be listened to on Youtube as sung by Gene Autry.

Buttons & Bows, Gene Autry

    Jientje’s last blog post..ABC in idioms, A and B

    1. Jientje — I just wanted to see yours before I posted mine to make certain we were both on the same page. I already have most of my submissions picked out and I am looking forward to next week!

  2. Liked what you’ve come up with, this is going to be a fun 13 weeks, you are going to have fun.

OH and I read what you wrote on “Young Thom’s” blog about just leaving comments, Does Someone have “Poopy Pants” today ??

    Cheers

    Watching for that 2×4

  3. I’ll have to ponder this and maybe catch up next week — no time this week. I have missed the photo and letter hunting from the ABC challenge, so this looks like a fun progression.

I’ve heard of having an ace up your sleeve but not “buttons and bows.”

Re reading — I do most of my reading in the (ahem) bathroom, during waiting times, and on drives when we go out of town. It’s not often I just sit around and read (unless I am at a really exciting part) except maybe for Sunday nights after church, my designated down time.Reading is like drinking water to me — I couldn’t survive without it.

Barbara H.’s last blog post..So what is this I’m eating?

  4. Barbara — this is more fun that I initially anticipated. I love finding the phrases and researching what they mean. This is a great challenge.

And I never get to stay in the bathroom long enough to enjoy a good read.

  5. This is a great post… and a wonderful challenge. My mind is working… haha. I hope it doesn’t have to be posted on a certain day or I will have missed it. Oh well, even if it’s late I’ll get it up. Need a couple days to do the photography though.

    1. Alice, today was the first day, and we’re supposed to post on Wednesdays, but nobody is going to get all testy and come unglued if you come in late. Just play along! It’s fun.

  6. well, this could be fun but i don’tsee myself anywhere in it (except for an occasional comment).
besides, i’m feeling that old ennui again and am contemplating a break from blogging altogether. what’s the point if there’s no fun in it
