Yes, trash bags! I remember using a trash bag to sled on. And lunch trays too, that is when we were small enough to fit our little behinds on them! I don't want to even think about snow right now. Great story.

Barbara, I grew up in snow, but I never learned to love it and I was not one of those talented people. It is no accident that I live in sunny climes!

Being raised in TX, I had no experience with snow until I was about 13. We were so excited to finally have snow that we raced outside an started o play in it -- and discovered to our amazement that that stuff HURT our gloveless hands. We had never needed gloves before.I was so disappointed that my idyllic notion on snow was marred. I did learn to love it when we moved to SC and actually did have snow occasionally. I was amazed at the talented people in college who had grown up with snow and did amazing snow sculptures.

I never knew that was why the front of sleds curled up, so they wouldn't dig into the snow. Makes sense!

Fortunately WE had Deale hill ... it was a humongous hill at Deale High School in Washington DC... It ended at a steep embankment that went up to the highway. NO way you were makin' it UP that embankment -- and if ya did you were gonna flip over backwards and come back down anyway. BUT... getting to Deale hill required parental help as in being driven... but we had a couple of streets in the neighborhood that got closed off too -- but they were waaaay back in the neighborhood... so they just ran into other small side streets. Really quite safe -- probably even by TODAY's standards! However... no one closed off streets for our Soap Box racers! And IF they had breaks they were the DELUXE model! Few of us had deluxe models!

Melli’s last blog post..Summer Stock Sunday ... & Down Home On The Farm!

Hiya Quilly.
I finally crawled out from under the Algarve rock and got back on the blog. I love the stories you tell and I feel the pain, smell the smells.... unfortunately.

My eye just caught the title of the post below - I'll go catch up a bit. But if you have been sick as it seems you have, please know I wish you well and hope you are on the mend. xoxox
