Have you written the store manager yet with a letter praising both his own reaction and especially that of the cashier? CC it to the manager’s boss and spread the love. They certainly deserve major kudos for the way this was handled.
And while you’re at it, give them the link to this post. Everyone will love it!

Yeah — I quit shopping in a store in Las Vegas where the manager cut costs by turning off the air conditioning and opening the doors to the parking lot, where the heat comes up off the pavement at 125 degrees F — then he refused to allow the cashiers beverages at the cash registers because it didn’t look professional. I was willing to pay more for a cooler store where the help wasn’t soaking wet from sweat and surly because of it!

What a great story. It makes me want to take that cashier a cupcake! And how kind of you to help defuse it.

Great story for all those management trainees out there. I love shopping in stores where the management backs the employees that way. You can always tell when that’s not the case — the whole atmosphere in the store is miasma.

I love your adventures at Safeway! What a fun place that has cashiers with common sense and managers with common sense too. That is amazing! That phone lady needed someone to kick her in the fanny on the way out the door.
Sounds to me like a sense of humor AND common sense AND friendliness are all evident at your Safeway store. No wonder you like shopping there so much.
