Black & White Macro Monday

Macro Monday is hosted by Lisa of Lisa’s Chaos. Do not ask my why I choose to join something new in the middle of moving! I am a glutton for punishment, I guess!

And the B&W is in honor of Nicole B. who is hosting a January B&W photo challenge which she specifically designed for the purpose to discussing techniques for turning color photos to B&W.

  • The 1st photo (top left) is the actual snap, straight out of the camera.
  • The2nd photo (top right), I created from photo #1.  I chose navy blue from the B&W filter option in Picasa.
  • The 3rd photo (bottom left) is my favorite.  I created it from photo #4 by removing “warmify” and adding “glow” in Picasa.
  • The 4th photo (bottom right), was created from photo #1 by pushing the B&W option in Picasa then clicking “warmify”. I also brought up “highlight” just a scoot.

Ultimately, I like the color photo of the hibiscus, but my second favorite is the bottom right. It looks like sepia finish.

There is no better way to take a break from cleaning and gathering than to hop on your computer and blog! Your computer should be the last thing you “unplug”!

I like what you do with picture. My poor pictures are stuck being what they are.

I love the first one the best, of course, it is natural and shines the purest spirit.

What lovely arts and creative mind you have.

I do believe that you have the brightest ideas of how to be the center of the attraction by vibrating and radiating positive energy.

    Keep us coming back, Quilly

    You are so cool!

Jingle — you’re starting to sound like a stalker and are scaring me. I am an ordinary person and don’t care much for hero worship.

  5. First or bottom left Quilly. OK. here’s a challenge. What’s the plural of hibiscus? Can’t be hibiscuses (though I like the sound — could be a Bullwinkle C. Moose word).

John — Like fish, you have 1 fish or 500 hundred fish — you have 1 Hibiscus or 500 Hibiscus. Some things don’t have plurals. There is a very sound lingustic explanation for that which I always provide when my English as a second language students ask such questions, “Porque, ingles es loco!”

  6. Dear Quilly, I hope all goes on well on the move. Wishing you and Amoeba all the best for a brand new start in 2010 :) .

These are all lovely photos! I love flower macros very much and you added beautiful effects on the original shot.

I like the color one best, too, but of all the effects I like the sepia-looking one best. They’re all interesting!

I’m rather partial to color, especially when capturing flowers, but my second fav is the bottom left.

I like the bottom two the best! But I can’t decide which ONE… But my REAL favorite is the bird in the bath two posts up!!! :)

Well done Quilly, I never thought of sepia for a flower but it works well here. Of the b&w I like number two because it has more contrast to bring out the details. As the picture stands it is quite lovely your selective focus is wonderful. You should link your shots to a larger version so we can see them bigger, this really is lovely.

Those are beautiful. It’s amazing what you can do with the photos. I’m like Dr. John basically. Mine are stuck with what they are LOL

  14. Holy cow, they’re lovely. The third is my favourite too: I like the way the black and white brings out all the delicate lines of the petals and the sunlight caught by the whole flower.

I didn’t know Picasa could do so much with photos — that’s very good to know, and thanks!

Susan — I had a professional photographer tell me he uses Picasa. He says a good photographer shouldn’t need any more than what Picasa can do.

  15. polona says:

i agree with the majority – colour is most becoming in flowers. but it’s fun to play with different options and they all turned out well. still, bottom left would be the one most appealing to me

    • Quilly says:

Polona — the bottom left is the one I like best, too. And I really enjoyed seeing what the color filters did to the photo. It was pretty amazing.

Such a beautiful bloom in all the ways you edited and the sooc! Very pretty!

Lisa — thanks! Hopefully after I’m moved I’ll be better able to focus on just macros. Now I am condensing things for time purposes.

  17. Nicole says:

Nr. 3 is my Fav too!
Love the details in it and the little glow at the edges.
