Savvy Money Management

August 28, 2010

Sitting in my Avon booth at the fair for 13 hours a day was long and it could have been pretty boring, but luckily, I met Dena. Dena and her husband, Stew, ran the booth directly behind mine. Stew did air brush tattoos. Dena sold dragon sculptures.

Dena and Stew are retired. They spend the warmer months of the year traveling from fairs to carnivals to trade shows. They like the life. It allows them to see the countryside, meet lots of new people, have fun and make money. When they first retired — early in life — they were looking forward to traveling but they didn’t plan to have to earn their keep in the process. Stew had a nice, fat 401k and an IRA account. Plus, Dena had been a very frugal housewife and invested the household monies she saved and compounded them by stock trading.

Then the market went south. Three-quarters of Stew’s 401k dried up and blew away. Dena, well versed in mobile trading, fared a bit better. She had diversified their portfolio and only a small percentage of their money was invested in high risk stocks.

Dena said she now does all of the couples money management.  Stew handed the reins over to her when she started rebuilding their nest egg through her savvy online trading.  Dena says she’s doubts she’ll ever recoup all of Stew’s 401k losses, but she’s got them growing in the right direction again.

Thanks to Dena my funds have grown in the right direction, too.  She bought a significant amount of Avon from me.  Of course you know I bought a dragon from her!  It was my drooling over her dragons that started us talking in the first place.
