If you are running your own business, you have enough to think about without worrying about your servers, too.  A friend of mine in Vegas lost quite a bit of the inventory records for her used book store.  Her server crashed and she hadn’t done a back up in quite some time.  She said Summer has just been too busy what with more people having leisure time — and her having less because her kids are home from school.

I talked to Joan about  managed hosting.  I told her that hosting providers like Superb.com promise 100% up-time and 24/7/365 service.  Not only that, providers like Superb facilitate all the data transfer, too.  I reminded her that with somebody else running the back-side of things she could spend a whole lot more time on the front-side.

Up until her servers crashed, Joan had never considered web hosting.  She likes to be in control.  Unfortunately when it comes to maintaining her data bases and servers, she just doesn’t have the knowledge to do it herself.

Even though Joan obviously doesn’t have the time or knowledge to maintain her own servers, she isn’t is hesitant to relinquish all control.  I told her that Superb also offers managed colocation services. With colocation, Joan’s own servers will be housed in a secure location especially designed to keep them running at optimum levels.  She wouldn’t be the one constantly stressing over adequate dust-free ventilation and room temps.  I don’t know if I sold her on the idea of getting a professional host, but she did say she’d look into it.
