People are always sending Amoeba invitations to apply for positions in their companies. In truth, that is a bit reassuring. It is nice to know Amoeba has various opportunities for employment should the need arise, but mostly I am happy here!
Even so, whenever he tells me about one of these opportunities, I immediately start looking into the economy in that part of the country. Just recently I did an internet search for Real estate Austin TX, and discovered that prices really aren’t much higher there than what we’re used to. Since the Austin real estate market looked pretty promising, I wondered if Austin needed teachers and what it takes to get licensed there. I was going to look into that when Amoeba mentioned a job possibility in Tel Aviv. And most recently he mentioned an offer in Ohio.
Today however I got one of those emails. It was addressed to Amoeba and it was an offer for work — in Kona. You know I go where Amoeba goes and Amoeba goes where the pay check is. Given all of the above choices, I would prefer to stay right where we are! Happily, Amoeba says he would, too.
Amoeba spent months wrangling over a contract with the outfit in Tel Aviv. I was looking forward to him getting that job. It never happened. They came up with a lot of promises, but didn’t actually have any money. Now the outfit in Ohio is sending out feelers. I haven’t bothered to look at the real estate market there, either. I understand it snows in Ohio — a lot.
I’m okay with moving to Texas. I am okay with moving to Tel Aviv. I am not okay with moving to Ohio — no offense meant to the good people who love that state. I am just happiest with the notion of staying right here where we are .

Yea… at least for a while I would think. Moving is so NOT fun….
You are in a mighty fine place.
.
Texas is a wonderful state to work and live in. Our state is broke as many are. We rob Peter to pay Paul since we had those big tax cuts (corporations, oil, and the rich). Every year since all that happened we get a letter saying to remember that our health insurance for retirees is at the whims of the legislature and every year our copays go up and the coverage goes down.
If Amoeba gets a teaching job in Texas make sure it is with a school that is in the Social Security System. Neither Mrs. Jim’s nor mine was. She looses over half of her Social Security payments due; I lose 25% of mine.
Those losses are from what we have earned before we taught or in Mrs. Jim’s case what she earned from the University of Texas at Galveston before she went into the public school system. My earnings were of 27 years of working before I went into the College job. Our College had opted out of the system.
Five states are like that. Massachusetts is one also. Kay Bailey H. was working on correcting this inequality until she dropped it when 9/11 happened. I have not voted for her since.
Guess I’ve cried enough, you can delete this if you wish.
If you move to Texas you guys be sure to look us up. And if you don’t have an oil well, then buy one.
