Google has combined all of my accounts and made it almost impossible for me to function. I kept three different Google accounts so I could have different programs open at the same time — plus there is my blogging email, my professional email, and my spam email (used when surfing the web). Lovely Google has combined them all and mixed everything together in one pot — this means that if I am using email #1 I cannot access anything linked to emails #2 & #3. And that means I can’t have my blog, my photo website, my email and Google reader all open at the same time.
All the different boxes I used to juggle to get my blogging done no longer exist. I would love to tell you about my trip to the coast and share my photos, but I can’t. I would love to visit your blogs, but I can’t open Google reader without cutting myself off from my email and a couple of other “never closed” applications. I have never been a fan of hotmail or Yahoo, but Google may have just pushed me that way.
At any rate — does anyone have a non-Google feed reader they would like to recommend? When the programs designed to help me start running me instead of me running them, it is time to find new programs. Google has just gotten too big for it’s own britches.

i’m having difficulty too.
i thought i had everything just the way i wanted it, i thought i had it all figured out.
now i have an account designated as this and one designated as that. i never asked for this.
its confusing and i dont understand why someone else made this decision for me. what was the problem of me have three gmail accounts open at once? is it because i can read well enough to distinguish between the three? or am i too full of my self to think i deserve more than one email address?
i could go on forever… sorry, i’ll soapbox on my own blog.
Ugh. I only have one gmail account so I hadn’t had a problem, but I did notice they had messed with it. I can’t get to my inbox the same way and it’s weird.
I have nothing to offer regarding readers, though. Sorry!
Hang in there.
They changed the look Click here
I, too, only have one Google account so I haven’t had much problem, but I’m not using Chrome either. That may be the issue, I know there have been some new (exciting ) changes made to Chrome? I have a hotmail account and use MSN as my homepage (upgraded with IE9) so I can do things in both browsers at the same time. I do know I get an aweful lot of junk/spam iinto my hotmail account, and far less in the Google account… I don’t know what to offer as a suggestion either. AND, I thought I was behind the times….I certainly hope you get ths issue resolved soon.
I have three g-mail accounts but I hadn’t noticed anything. Our family e-mail is an AOL address, but one g-mail account is for Internet stuff, another for one particular application, and the third has fallen by the wayside unused. I have all my g-mail mail forwarded to my AOL account and only look at them through Google if I need to answer one of them.
I’m on Google Reader through just the main address I use for Internet surfing/blogging/purchasing.
OK, I just tried opening two different windows with two of my g-mail addresses, and I see what you mean — opening the second one signed me out of the first one. Really dumb that they would do that. I wonder if the advent of Google + had anything to do with that?
I don’t know what you could do about it except, as you said, have some e-mail addresses with other places. I have never tried hotmail or Yahoo.
I used to use Bloglines as a feed reader (http://www.bloglines.com/). They were okay but a little slow to update, but they’ve been taken over or have added another company so maybe they’re more on top of things now. My account is still open with them and I just looked at it — looks like everything is in working order.
I have never used Google. I use Yahoo for email and IE favorites for checking on blogs I enjoy. So far, no problems.
What do you mean the combined your accounts. They don’t do that as far as I know. I have 3 gmail address and I have nothing combined. When I want to use the other email address’s I just click on the name in the upper right and it says switch account and I go there. I have totally different readers for all the accounts that I have as well. It associates only the info from one particular account with that account. So if you could please let me know what you mean by combining the accounts maybe I could help you. It’s no different on Chrome or Safari…they are both identical in the way that Google handles it.
Thom — try to open two different email accounts at one time. Just try it. You cannot. I can’t open my blog email account and my personal email account at the same time. I prefer keeping them both open in the background as I work. Furthermore, Picasa is linked to my blog email account, so I cannot open Picasa when my personal email is open. Google signs me out of my personal email account when I sign in to Picasa. The same thing happens with several other linked accounts.
In other words, if I want to send a photo from Picasa from my personal email account, there are now several more time consuming steps involved. Google has not made my life easier, it has just made it harder is is wasting considerable amounts of my time.
DITTO!
Word.
Well I don’t have that problem. I have an email aggregator Sparrow. I set up my email accounts in there and it sends me all the emails within it’s own program and I can respond directly from that account. I don’t know if it works on a PC or not as I use a Mac. I also have my email accounts set up to all come into my main gmail account. I can send and respond from any one of them without having to log in and out of that particular Gmail account. As far as Picassa I don’t use it all that much so I don’t know what time consuming steps you are talking about. But I’m going to start using it more because of Google+ What I have noticed however is that there is a switch account button that is painless to use and it jet’s me right to the account I want to go to.
I’m no help since Meandering is my only Google account. My e-mail is through Comcast which is our internet provider. Lots of my family and friends have used hotmail and yahoo for years.
I’m commenting just to let you know that I’ve missed your blog. I was hoping to hear about your visit with family, the lovely things you and Amoeba have been up to, updates on your garden, etc. I’ll still be here when you find a solution!
Sounds complicated.
I don’t see that it’s anything new. I’ve always had to close one google account to open another. When there’s something in my main account that I need for my Friends of the Library account, I just forward it there. It’s not that big a deal.
BUT, I don’t use a lot of the functions you described. I don’t think they’d be very timesaving for me.
And, I use the iPhone to retrieve the e-mail from the various gmail accounts. It keeps them separate just fine.
Kelley — my quilldancer.com email has always opened when my quilldancer@gmail account opened. Now they no longer will. When I sign into one it automatically signs me out of the other. On top of that, it also signs me out of any programs linked to that account — like Picasa, Facebook, etc.
However, I have been reading the help pages and may have found the solution. We shall see. Thanks for telling me the problem that has been driving me nuts for days and not letting me access my different accounts isn’t really an issue since it isn’t a problem for you. I am sure that’s not what you meant.
I’m not much help either Quilly. I only have one Gmail account and another one that comes via my broadband service provider. I feed them both into Microsoft Outlook as I hate online email. That way I only have to look in one place. Lazy! At work we were warned and were not allowed to use or access Hotmail, it was banned!
I don’t use Google Reader or a photo website for picture storage any more either.
It does annoy you when they do things without letting you know. Can’t you feedback your comments to them?
Wow, another reason to escape Google/Blogger…!
I have resorted to having different browsers open (ie, ff, chrome, etc.) so I can do more than one thing at a time and be logged in to similar but separate accounts at the same time. It’s inelegant, but it works. As for the reader… no idea. I do use the google reader but I’m sure there are more out there.
Good luck!!
Jenn — you’re brilliant! I love you! MAWH!
tee hee *blush* It would have come to you sooner or later I’m sure
Glad I could help though!
That’s a great idea.
also, i dont know why i’m a pig now… i should be a cat.
Tilden — you have to change your pic in Avatar, too — did you do that?
I’m also not very technologically savvy so I’m not exactly sure what the problem is. I’m so sorry for the trouble you’re going through though. I hope I don’t run into the same problem.
I know nothing, but it is nice to hear from you.
