Two years ago, He and She started this adventure that is “Their Lives Together” here on this island. Today, she is thinking that their relationship might have been much shorter had the following scene happened then rather than at noon today:

She itching all over, whined to him about her horrid red rash. He grabbed his magnifying glass and her arm and took a look.

“It’s a rash,” he said. “Where else is it?”

She told him there was one kind of rash on her tummy and her leg, and another kind of rash on her arm and her butt.

He looked at everything with his hand lens (magnifying glass) — even her butt. She said, “I would think you could see my butt well enough without making it bigger!”

He ignored that. He also dismissed the rash on her tummy and leg, agreeing with her that it was probably her reoccurring eczema. Then he invited her to examine her own arm with the hand lens. “See the red pustules?” He queried. She nodded. “Those are on your butt, too,” he said.

“So what are they?” She wailed.

He smirked and said, “Poison Ivy most likely.”

“Poison Ivy!” She wailed.

He tried valiantly not to laugh. “I’m afraid so.”

“I am suffering here!” She said. “You are not supposed to be enjoying this!”

He really smiled then and said, “I’m sorry, love. I’m not enjoying this, I just can’t seem to do anything about the smile.”

She thought of several things She could do about his smile, but was too busy scratching to act on any of them.

I am loving my time here in Friday Harbor. Are you tired of my walks yet? I’m not. The Friday Harbor Lab grounds are a nature preserve. One is not allowed to pick the flowers or bother the animals. However, taking pics is a whole different matter.

My intent this afternoon — after a very lazy day of lounging around the house — was to walk down the road a piece and photograph the Fox Glove in the yard by the cabins.

Fox Glove

On my way back from photographing the Fox Glove, I met this little fella.

White Crowned Sparrow

He was a mouthy little thing and he had quite a bit to say to me — and by the tone I don’t think any of it was complimentary. He was upset because I was investigating a berry bush he has staked out as his. It is obvious he’s not up for sharing.

But the highlight of today came this morning as Amoeba and I were starting the day. Amoeba got to the living room before me and I heard him speak — barely above a whisper, “Hey, Love. Get your camera and come here.”

I did not know what he was going to show me, but I walked quietly through the apartment, got my camera and joined him at the window. I took this through the glass:

Velvet Pronged Buck

This shot and the close up following it I took from the balcony.

Buck

Should I Run?

He chose to saunter slowly away.

Day Six

A Few Pictures & a Couple of Anecdotes

She downloaded her pictures and sat beside him with the computer. Please note, He is a BOTANIST/oceanographer. She says to him, “See these pink flowers?” He says, “Hmmm.” She says, “What are they?” He looks at them closely, nods decisively and says, “Pink flowers.”

Pink Flowers

I found this little beauty hiding shyly in the bushes:

Doe

Then this sweet Robin,
with a bit of song and dance,
led me in the opposite direction I’d planned to go.

Robin Red Breast

But, thanks to Robin, I found these beautiful Sea Anemones.

Anthopleura Sea Anemones

And, in the next tide pool I found this empty oyster shell being scrubbed by sea snails.

Oyster Shell & Sea Snails

When I returned home I found this fella sunning himself on the porch railing.

Gull

But by far my favorite pics of the day were of a fisherman who came by while I was playing in the tide pool. He came and went so quickly, there was no time to adjust the speed on my camera, so these are not as clear as I would like.

American Bald Eagle

*~*

American Bald Eagle

You can make any photo larger by clicking on it — and larger again by clicking “All Sizes” on the Flickr menu.

She is a bit perplexed this morning — and not amused by it. It seems that He, despite his two years in Hawaii is content to sleep without covers on these 50 degree nights, while She, after ten years in Vegas then two years in Hawaii, is bundled under the covers from her nose to her toes. Given that She was swaddled from head to toe and He wore only a scrap of cloth, She wants to know why she woke covered in mosquito bites this morning, and he has nary a one!

She wants to have a serious talk with Mother Nature. He is perfectly content with the status quo.
