Salt & Pepper, 2009
Charlene L. Amsden, photographer
When I get bored I play with my camera. We were in a restaurant in Kona and there was a very long wait between our appetizer and our main course. We wondered if they’d actually gone out in the boats to catch the fresh fish we ordered for dinner.   When the meal finally arrived we discovered it was well worth waiting for, and I actually never used the salt & pepper.

Romantic Garden, 2009
Charlene L. Amsden, photographer
Another shot of the San Juan Winery’s lovely garden. I was going for an “impressionistic” kind of shot. I like the swirl of colors and the way the composition of the photo draws my gaze to the “sweet-spot” in the middle.

Thematic Photograph 63 — Summer

Sailboarding at Diamond Head, 2009
Charlene L. Amsden, photographer
There is a scenic overlook on Diamond Head road that provides gorgeous views. I like to drive by every other week or so and sit myself on the rock wall and soak it all in. The ocean is such an incredible color there, and in the Summer there is always a water sport or three going on.

Alpaca, 2009.
photo taken at Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm, San Juan Island, WA.
Charlene L. Amsden, photographer
We spent several weeks this Summer in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Mostly Amoeba was working — teaching at the Friday Harbor Labs — and I wandered around taking photographs. Occasionally Amoeba set aside his microscope and took a jaunt. One of those jaunts led us to Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm where we got to participate in feeding time. It also took us to the gift shop where we got to participate in shopping.
Resumes out. No phone calls in.

Maple Sunshine, 2009
photo taken in Lime Kiln Park, San Juan Island, WA
If I was asked to describe the colors of happiness, to me it would be the green of Maple leaves against a Summer blue sky. I took this shot while sitting in the shade cooling off. The sun patterns on the leaves intrigued me. They still do.

Cormorant Condo 2009.
Photo taken at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, Anacortes, WA. from the back of an outbound ferry.
In Washing ton State we call these Cormorants. In other parts of the world they are called, Shags, because of the distinctive shaggy creast on the top of their heads. Whatever you want to call them, their little commune on the pier is an interesting site for travels riding the Washington State Ferries out of Anacortes, WA.

I have a couple of favorite places here on the island that keep calling my camera and I back over and over again. One of them is Diamond Head Road. I love to drive up to the scenic overlook, park my car, and sit on the side of the lava rock wall. From there no matter which way I look has a magical view. On one particular day last week, this was the view. Doesn’t it look like something out of a fairy tale?

Right Here, All On One Plate
Last Summer Amoeba and I enjoyed a lovely dinner on the patio of the Makaha Resort & Golf Club overlooking the golf course. After our scrumptious meal, we ordered a piece of luscious chocolate cake to share. The cake was so good, we ate every last bite and scraped the plate as clean as was politely possible, then we sat back to settle our food and sip tall glasses of chilled island tea.
A little Brazilian Cardinal sat on the patio railing and watched intently as we ate. When the meal was over, our lovely waitress whisked our plates away, but when dessert was over, we pushed the plate aside and there it stayed. It didn’t take more than two minutes for the Brazilian Cardinal to move from the rail, to the chair, from the chair to the table and from the table to the plate. Once on the plate he investigated it thoroughly, then turned around to tell us off for not leaving him any. Greedy humans, anyway!
